Australia Sustainable Food, Environment, & Social Systems 2017

Blog site for the 2017 MSU study abroad program.

21-Collin T.

My name is Collin Tefft i was born in Switzerland and raised in Minnesota i like the out doors and hiking all over. i am very excited to hike in Australia and climb its tallest peak as i am on a mission to climb the tallest mountains in every continent (including everest!) this is one of the main reasons i am studying abroad. i am also very interested in learning about Australia’s culture!

For my project i would like to learn about the sustainability of hotels and tourist locations in Australia. i believe this would benefit me because i am a hospitality major so learning about the sustainability of these hotels would benefit me greatly through my major. i would specifically like to focus on food and water waste in the kitchens of hotels throughout Australian.

i could ask questions at hotels in Australia about how much food and water that they throw out and if they donate food to shelters.

another question i could ask is what tourists locations are doing to help Australia and and be eco friendly.

and a final question is what hotels are doing to limit the amount of resources used to do laundry and if they are trying to use less water.

In Australia I was able to do a lot of research on how the tourism industry is adapting to reduce the use of energy and water in order to be more sustainable i found that three major ways this was being done was through finding alternatives for aviation fuel, reducing water by using rainwater collection tanks and low water usage appliances and finally by providing education to travelers on how they can protect the environment while traveling through the country. I believe the most important role of these tourist operators are to inform the public about what they can do to be economically sustainable and help preserve some of the worlds greatest natural wonders for the future generations.
